How to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP

Here is how to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.

1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run

2. Type MSCONFIG in the “Open:” box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.

3. This launches Microsoft’s System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

4. This takes you to a page with a list of “startup items.” Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

In Windows XP, all of Windows’ essential programs are loaded through something called “Windows Services.” This means that most of the startup items you see in XP are completely optional and can be turned off. However, a good rule of thumb is to disable only those programs that you recognize and don’t need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on. Or, better still, check out Paul “PacMan” Collins’ huge “Startup Applications” list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. This list of over 13,000 startup items you may encounter in MSCONFIG tells you which items are absolutely necessary, which items are optional, and which items you should definitely uncheck.

Remember, disable only those programs that you recognize and don’t need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on.

5. Click on the OK button.

6. A message will pop up telling you that you must restart your computer before these changes will take effect. Click on “Yes” and your computer will automatically reboot.

7. That’s it! Your computer should now boot faster and crash less.

And if you ever want to turn on any of the startup items you disabled with MSCONFIG, just run MSCONFIG again.

How to Choose a Laptop or Notebook Computer

Step 1: Read through How to Choose a Desktop Computer. The “Before you shop” points and most of “The basics” also apply when shopping for a laptop.

Step 2: Pick up the laptops at the store. (Ask to have them unlocked if necessary.) Choose one that feels sturdy, solid and not too heavy.

Step 3: Try the keyboard. Since you can’t replace it (except with the exact same item), make sure you’re comfortable with its touch and responsiveness. Test it on a desk and on your lap.

Step 4: Test the pointing device, track pad or track ball, the laptop alternatives to a mouse. Some of these can be hard to master. You’ll be able to connect an external mouse, but the built-in device is more handy when you’re mobile.

Step 5: Check if the computer’s bottom gets uncomfortably hot when it’s running–a problem if you actually use the laptop on your lap.

Step 6: Pay attention to screen size and resolution. Current liquid-crystal display (LCD) screens on laptops measure from 13 to 21 inches diagonally. Screen resolution may be as low as 800 x 600 pixels or as high as 1600 x 1200. The more pixels, the crisper the screen image. View the screen in a variety of settings: A screen that looks great in normal room lighting can look terrible in bright or dim light.

Step 7: Choose a laptop with at least two USB 2 connections and at least one Firewire (IEEE1394) connection. USB 2 and Firewire are very popular and fast ways of connecting iPods, digital cameras and some phones to computers.

Step 8: Check to see if the laptop has built in wireless capabilities, most do these days. A wireless network card will free you from having to be wired to your Internet connection . Also, Bluetooth capability will let you share information wirelessly with other Bluetooth-equipped devices, such as your cell phone or personal digital assistant.

Step 9: Check to see if the laptop has a DVD Burner. That makes backing up documents, music files and pictures a snap because of the high capacity of the discs.

Step 10: Get an antitheft device. Hundreds of thousands of laptops are stolen every year. Look for cables that secure the laptop to a desk. Install software that disables a stolen laptop, or better yet, reports the laptop’s location when it connects to the Internet.
